Whether you’re a craft beer novice or looking to sharpen up your credentials, Combustion Brewery & Taproom‘s Beer 101: Beer Essentials class promises to make you a better, more educated beer drinker! Led by Dr. Kirsten Dangaran (developer of the Ohio State University Brewing Science course), the three sessions of this class will cover the basics of beer and brewing, improving tasting skills and digging deep into beer styles. Tons of great beer coming out from Wolf’s Ridge Brewing in Columbus this month… The taproom anniversary party on Saturday, Jan. 27 will feature six – count ‘em, six – limited edition bottles including three variations on the Nibbert English Barleywine. Hard to believe the Ohio Craft Brewers Conference is almost upon us! The 2018 Conference is being held in downtown Cleveland at the Huntington Convention Center on Jan. 30 & 31. In its 4th year, this educational symposium for Ohio breweries will host 24 breakout seminars on topics ranging from technical brewing to construction/expansion considerations to best business practices. Mary Pellettieri, quality instructor for the Brewers Association, will deliver the opening keynote address on innovation in brewing. The Conference is open to the public with discounts available for Ohio Craft Brewers Association brewery, brewery-in-planning and allied members. Brewmaster Luke Purcell will be leading a four session Beer 101 course at Collision Bend Brewing Company in the Flats. Each session will delve into a specific brewing topic and feature a tasting portion focused on particular beer styles, with beers provided by Collision Bend, Brick & Barrel, Thirsty Dog, Terrestrial and Noble Beast. Butcher and the Brewer is hosting the 3rd annual Stout It Out Loud! stout and oyster fest on Saturday, Feb. 17. The event will feature stouts and signature craft brews from 24 Ohio craft breweries, all alongside east- and west-coast oysters of various preparations. Maize Valley Brewery might have a winner on their hands with their new Cleveland’s Cursed Imperial Brown Ale. This roasty monster clocks in at 7.7% ABV and should be a contender for your #1 draft pick. Available now at select Northeast Ohio retailers.

This Saturday, Jan. 20, Hoppin’ Frog releases their Maple Barrel-Aged B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout, aged in maple-staved Canadian whiskey barrels with Canadian maple sap and maple-toasted oak chips. Bottle release begins at 3 p.m. at the tasting room in Akron.

Welcome Uniontown Brewing Co., the newest member of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association! Doug and Anna Reynolds opened the doors of their Ashland brewpub on Dec. 20, 2017. First Earnest Brew Works in Toledo announces the release of their new Orion the Hunter Black Imperial Wheat, then a meteor streaks through the sky and explodes just to the north? It’s gotta be a sign… Stop by Earnest this week and see what a cosmic experience this 11.2% beer really is.

Flatrock Brewery has recently begun canning their beers and will be releasing their new Fleming Caramel Chocolate Stout in 4-packs this Saturday, Jan. 20. These and other Flatrock cans are on sale at their brewpub in downtown Napoleon.


The distinctive bottles from Buckeye Lake Brewery are getting a little facelift. Redesigned labels for Shovelhead Double IPA, Legend Valley IPA, Buckeye Lake Blonde Golden Ale and the newly named Dublin Style Irish Red Ale are landing on store shelves this week. Buckeye Lake will be celebrating their 6th anniversary on Monday, Feb. 5 with growler fill discounts.

Alright hear this: it’s time to get ill with Homestead Beer Co.! They’re celebrating 5 years of beers on Saturday, Feb. 10 with special releases at the brewery in Heath, including a “top secret” bottle. Not sure what the new style will be: we’ll have to wait for the update on Homestead’s Facebook page, but you can bet she’s crafty…


It’s Fiona the hippo’s first birthday, so Listermann Brewing is releasing three canned versions of their Team Fiona NE IPA. Team Fiona: Birthday Edition, Team Fiona: Bifi (with apricots and peaches) and Double Dry Hopped Team Fiona will all be available at the brewery on Saturday, Jan. 20 with sales starting at 10 a.m. For purchase limits and more info, check the Listermann Facebook page.

Taft’s Brewing Company recently tapped Judgement #3, the latest in their series of experimental Double IPAs. This incarnation features a pronounced Golden Promise malt backbone and loads of pine, citrus and dank herb flavors from Eureka hops. Available at Taft’s Ale House in Over-the-Rhine and at the Taft’s Brewporium in Spring Grove Village.

Save the dates: MadTree Brewing Company’s 5-year anniversary is going to be a week-long celebration from Feb. 12-18. The first four days will feature guest drafts from around Cincinnati, the rest of Ohio and some out-of-state breweries without Ohio distribution. On Saturday, Feb. 17, MadTree is throwing open the cellar doors to pour a huge variety of first five year favorites and rarities from the barrel warehouse. The future is being made today! Dr. Bunsen Northeast IPA from Yellow Springs Brewery will be released in cans for the first time this Saturday, Jan. 20 at the brewery. The Mosaic, Citra and EKG hops combined with the fruity esters from the yeast make this a juicy tropical fruit IPA lover’s dream. A limited edition Spiegelau IPA glass will also be available for purchase while supplies last.

The first ever IPA from Heavier Than Air Brewing in Centerville – appropriately named “Experimental IPA-1” – is available at their taproom starting this weekend. This is a small batch IPA, so be sure to get it soon before it’s gone.
